Excerpt from The Seven Lamps of Architecture

Every apology is, however, due to the reader, for the hasty and imperfect execution of the plates. Having much more serious work in hand, and desiring merely to render them illustrative of my meaning, I have sometimes very completely failed even of that humble aim; and the text, being generally written before the illustration was completed, sometimes naively describes as sublime or beautiful, features which the plate represents by a blot. I shall be grateful if the reader will in such cases refer the expressions of praise to the Archi tecture, and not to the illustration.

So far, however, as their coarseness and rudeness admit, the plates are valuable; being either copies of memoranda made upon the spot, or (plates IX. And XI.) enlarged and adapted from Daguerreotypes, taken under my own superin tendence. Unfortunately, the great distance from the ground of the window which is the subject of Plate IX. Renders even the Daguerreotype indistinct; and I cannot answer for the accuracy of any of the mosaic details, more especially of those which surround the window, and which I rather imagine, in the original, to be sculptured in relief. The general propor tions are, however, studiously preserved; the spirals of the shafts are counted, and the effect of the whole is as near that of the thing itself, as is necessary for the purposes of illustra tion for which the plate is given. For the accuracy of the rest I can answer, even to the cracks in the stones, and the number of them; and though the looseness of the drawing, and the picturesque character which is necessarily given by an endeavor to draw old buildings as they actually appear, may perhaps diminish their credit for architectural veracity, they will do so unjustly.

The Seven Lamps of Architecture

The Seven Lamps of Architecture, written by John Ruskin on a series of lectures use in his lectures. The book is an epic because of its' historical accounts of information given to architects in the past and continues to now and in the future. His use of the English language is superb, where the reader is lost in the beautiful words and the excellent techincal material.

He emphasizes the points of good design that is dependent on a series of seven factors. He also gives example of buildings that are under discussion, the plates are not in the Kindle edition therefore the book must be bought otherwise the reader has to keep googling in order to find his examples. The examples are explained in detail.

The first few pages are slightly boring, but like all good books he dives into the subject and never let up, drowning the reader is good information.

Several classmates also ordered this book online, but they chose a different, better version. This one is filled with formatting and spelling errors as if someone used a scanner with word recognition software to make this copy. My recommendation if you need this book for class keep looking
one star is too many for this....It is a rip off...No actual text is is just references , which is not stated anywhere in the description. I thought I was getting punked.
am so Disappointed of this book !! the copying is not readable at ALL the words are missing ,, its just like printing a book with a printer that has low ink ,, there is no single page that is copied properly.
This book is a reproduction of a library book the pages are scanned from another source at a low resolution. Images are pixellated, the pages are slightly different sizes, and contain notes from someone else who reviewed the book. It appears that someone scanned every page of a library book, printed, bound it. I recommend a different publisher for this important Ruskin text.
I had to read this book for a masters class and it was fun to be able to read an older edition like this. The condition of this book was excellent and the price was great, but how much demand is there for old copies of John Ruskin? Pretty obscure stuff. Nonetheless, I was thrilled to find it and the seller was very accurate with their description, fair with the price and fast with the shipping.
If you're interested in knowing why Ruskin was considered the foremost authority on art and architecture in his day, you can probably get a sense of that by reading an anthology of selections from his voluminous writings.

If you want to go deeper, read this book and the first two volumes of MODERN PAINTERS. If you go further, you've become a Ruskin fanatic, not a bad thing to be!
A veritable tour the force of scope and insight.
Indispensable background nowadays regretfully almost forgotten.

1- Sacrifice – Dedication of man's craft to God, as visible proofs of man's love and obedience
2- Truth – Handcrafted and honest display of materials and structure. Truth to materials and honest display of construction were bywords since the serious Gothic Revival had distanced itself from the whimsical "Gothic" of the 18th century; it had been often elaborated by Pugin and others.
3- Power – Buildings should be thought of in terms of their massing and reach towards the sublimity of nature by the action of the human mind upon them and the organization of physical effort in constructing buildings.
4- Beauty – Aspiration towards God expressed in ornamentation drawn from nature, his creation
5- Life – Buildings should be made by human hands, so that the joy of masons and stone carvers is associated with the expressive freedom given them
6- Memory – Buildings should respect the culture from which they have developed
7- Obedience – Obedience to the spirit, values and cannons of and art tradition which is expert, truthful, fertile and honest. No originality for its own sake, but conforming to the finest among existing English values, in particular expressed through the "English Early Decorated" Gothic as the safest choice of style.
