A characteristic of high fantasy literature has been the writing of multi-volume, complex series but these works, including Robert Jordan’s fantasy epic “The Wheel of Time,” have attracted little of the critical scrutiny that they deserve.
In a work that Robert Jordan himself encouraged and eagerly anticipated, Heather Attrill’s A Web of Words starts to rectify that situation by analysing his great fantasy series.
A lifelong reader of mediaeval literature, Attrill uses her rich knowledge to explore the role and purpose of Jordan as the epic-style high fantasy author, and that of his online fans, as storytellers and pattern makers.
A Web of Words focuses on the technique of interlacing as the key structuring device of the Wheel of Time to unlock the patterning of Jordan’s narrative, which is reminiscent of the intricate knot-making characteristic of early Anglo-Saxon art.
"I really look forward to seeing [it]…I wrote the books but I’ve never seen any sort of analysis of them, and it would be most interesting."
Robert Jordan, 2005.

This feels like one pound of content in a five-pound bag. That one pound of content made the reading completely worthwhile, but if you decide to read this book, be prepared for quite a bit of repetition and wordiness. I got the feeling that this was someone's senior thesis, plumped up and made into a book. Or maybe 4-5 upper level semester papers brought together into one package.Chapter 1, the section on interlacing is where this book really shines for me. I might have liked to have read more about, and had some more lengthy examples of, medieval literature that uses the technique, but overall, very good stuff. I can do more in-depth exploration on my own.
Chapters 2-4 are pretty good too. Definitely worth the read. Nice working out of Jordan's use (and tweaking) of some common, canonical fantasy themes and motifs. Don't expect too much new here, if you've had any college level Lit classes and thought about fantasy literature at all, but it's good stuff if you want to get a glimpse into how a master story teller like Jordan uses his tools.
Chapter 5, the section on the Internet and gaming is worth a skim, but feels pretty stretched. I got the point within a few pages, but then it kept going on and on. While, as I mentioned above, the whole book feels a bit fluffed up, this chapter was the worst offender to me.
The book is worth a read if you're a fan of Jordan or fantasy literature, but keep your expectations in check.
